Teopanzolco
Temple of Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli

The front of Temple of Tlaloc and Huitzilpochtli at Teopanzolco.

The Temple of Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli is the main temple at Teopanzolco.  It is the largest and best preserved temple.  I did not get any feeling from this temple.

According to the INAH Plaque accompanying this temple, the Mexicas (Aztecs) built the monumental base of the Temple of Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli to look like Tenochtitlan’s Main Temple.  the temple had wood framework holding up thatch roofs.  The north temple, dedicated to the rain god Tlaloc, was shorter than the south temple, dedicated to Huitzilopochtli.  The Tlahuicas originally stuccoed and painted in bright colors both temple and the pyramidal base.  The inner base supporting the temple remains is the older of the 2 bases, with a wide gap in between.  The Mexicas (Aztecs) were working on the more recent base when the Spanish conquered them.  The Mexicas (Aztecs) put debris in the gap between the 2 bases.
